Stephens County scores big win in north Georgia showdown
From the opening kickoff until the clock was at 0:00, Friday night was an overall dominating performance by the Stephens County Indians. Defeating Dawson County 38-10, the Indians were in control throughout the entire game. On the first possession of the game, Stephens County DB, Isaac Defoor, intercepted a pass to set the Indians up with prime field position.
The interception led to a rushing touchdown by RB Javin Gordon. Everything was going right for the Indians, at the 11:48 mark in the second quarter, Indian QB Ben Stowe threw a deep ball, the pass was tipped and caught by Jasec Smith, who took the rock the rest of the 63 yards for a touchdown.
Stowe also found Smith for the second time of the night with 1:51 left in the half, leading 21-0 heading into the second half. Dawson County started the half with an unsuccessful onside kick, setting Stephens County up with great field position. The Tiger defense accepted the challenge, had a couple of tackles for loss, and forced a punt, getting the ball back into their offense’s hands. Dawson County drove down the field, and Dominic Leblanc hit a 29 yard field goal to put the first points on the board for the Tigers. Stephens County answered with a touchdown drive of their own, capped off with Javin Gordon finding the end zone for the second time on the night. He wouldn’t stop there, Gordon scored for a third time late in the game that solidified the victory for the Indians.
Javin Gordon finished the night with 165 yards, and 3 touchdowns on 25 rushing attempts, earning himself a helmet sticker for week 4. QB Ben Stowe went 8-13 for 172 yards and 2 touchdowns, Jasec Smith had 2 receptions on the night with both of them resulting in touchdowns. Defensively, Brock Tankersley led the charge for Stephens County, totaling 14 tackles with 3 tackles for loss. Isaac Defoor, and Cam’Ron Lacy each had an interception, while safety Corey Richie had 3 tackles and 2 pass breakups, one of which coming in the end zone to deny Dawson County a touchdown. For the Tigers, Kade Moledor and Matt Bennett were the standout players, Moledor had 9, while Bennett contributed with 6 tackles and 1 pass breakup. Moving forward, Dawson County has a bye week coming up, and then kickoffs region play against West Hall on September 23rd. Stephens County plays host to White County next week for their homecoming game, before their tough region gauntlet begins with a road test against Monroe Area at the end of the month.
